AltStrings: Book Cover

AltStrings was created as a resource for music teachers and students who want to get more out of their playing — more skills, more progress, and more fun! Developed by a Suzuki-certified teacher who is also a National Champion fiddler steeped in the folk tradition, AltStrings brings together these two approaches to provide a unique path of musical discovery for the string player.

The second edition of AltStrings Fiddle Books 1 and 2 comes in two flavors: Original Key (for Violin), and Orchestra!

Whichever series you choose, AltStrings Books 1 and 2 offer tunes and techniques that complement and reinforce the skills students are learning in their private lessons or orchestra classes. And don’t worry, we haven’t included any of the racist minstrel songs you’ll find in other collections of fiddle tunes; only music that belongs in the hands of kids!

Book 1 offers players a solid start on the instrument, and includes an introduction to the skills needed for playing chords and chopping.

Book 2 guides players through more difficult tunes, but also builds skills in playing chords, backup rhythms, chopping, ornamentation, and creating twin fiddle/harmony parts.

Books 3 and up will continue the topics from Books 1 and 2, as well as feature transcriptions of the playing of today’s greatest fiddlers, including Alasdair Fraser, Liz Carroll, Michael Doucet, Casey Driessen, Natalie MacMaster, Mia and Mikael Marin, Rodney Miller, Bruce Molsky, and Laura Risk. Stay tuned for more!
